A little history...
With the same aim as that of the national nature reserves and the protection of historical monuments, the first interventions by the government in France with regard to the environment were a matter of separating nature from its main threat, man. The aim was to conserve and preserve these sites which were particularly interesting from an artistic, historic, legendary or picturesque point of view. Disarmed by lack of knowledge and faced with the reality of the problems, the strict exclusion of human activity or presence, of even users, was seen as being the most effective means of preservation.
It is with this in mind that a record of listed sites was drawn up in 1930 (law of 2nd May 1930), among which Mont Saint-Michel has been counted since 1935.
