Natura 2000
European directives
The recognition of a site through its registration as part of the Natura 2000 network is carried out as a result of two directives:
- One, dating from 1979, and called the Bird directive, determines the protection areas that must be set up on a European level to protect remarkable or threatened bird populations.
- The other, dating from 1992, and known as the Habitats directive, determines the preservation sites and the natural environments of plant species or threatened animals on a European scale.
Natura 2000 in France
In France, the implementation of this network depends on local dialogue, directed under the aegis of the Government to date, in association with local authorities and local representatives of those involved: farmers, fishermen, hunters, those involved in the tourist industry and businesses...
This local dialogue has resulted in the formalization of a document call the Objectives Document, which defines the actions that must be implemented to maintain these sites in a good state of preservation.
