        Pilgrims today

Genêts is still a stopping place between the mainland and the Mont. Walkers who follow the tracks of these pilgrims cross the Bay (on the shore, but sometimes inland). Nearly 100,000 people go from Genêts to Mont-Saint-Michel, with an approved Bay guide.

Pilgrimages

Genêts
Pilgrims of formerly

Genêts, a small quiet town, located on the edge of the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, experienced many a fine hour. Its destiny was closely linked to that of Mont-Saint-Michel. The pilgrims who came from all over Christendom, were to cross the shore to finally reach their destination, the Mont. Saint-Aubert, the founder of the Mont, was also born in Genêts.

For nearly 1,300 years the Mont did what was necessary to welcome the crowds of visitors and pilgrims. For the pilgrim in the Middle-Ages, to cross the dangerous shores to Saint-Michel, the protective archangel, was an initiatory and redemptive journey and the Mont was the symbol of paradise. On the rock, the people of the Mont gave board and lodging to the “followers of St Michel” The ecclesiastics at the Hôtellerie des Loges, the Bretons at the Ecu de Bretagne.

The pilgrims like tourists today, purchased souvenirs during their pilgrimages.
