Restaurants in Cancale: Guide to the Best Tables
Cancale is world-renowned for its flat (belon) and cupped oysters farmed in the Channel bay. With over 600 oyster farmers and a centuries-old tradition, the town offers two ways to experience oysters: standing at the quayside with the stall sellers, or seated in a restaurant with sea views.
? How does the oyster market on quai de la Houle work?
The quai de la Houle hosts oyster stall sellers daily who open and sell their oysters directly from their stands. It's the most authentic and cheapest way to taste Cancale oysters.
Stall sellers set up along the quay facing the sea, generally from 8am to 5pm (sometimes into the evening in summer). Buy your opened oysters, eat them on the spot with the lemon and shallot vinegar provided, and throw the shells into the sea from the quay.
? Which restaurants to recommend for a seated lunch?
About ten restaurants around the port and in the town centre offer seafood menus with table service, sea views and a wine cellar.
Port restaurants offer the best views over the bay. Town centre ones are quieter with slightly lower prices. Booking recommended at weekends and in July–August.
